Netbackup 6.5.5, Puredisk 6.6 (using Puredisk Virtual Appliance)

Attempting DR testing in a virtual environment which reflects live setup.

Site 1:
Netbackup Master Server (Windows 2003) with PDDO installed
Windows 2003 Domain controller/DNS server, also with netbackup client installed
PDVA 6.6.0.2

Site 2:
PDVA 6.0.0.2
"Warm standby" DR master server

Successfully configured the environment so that the Netbackup client backed up to a storage lifecycle policy which stored primary data on the Site 1 PDVA and replicated to the Site 2 PDVA. Also performed Netbackup catalog backup.

Then simulated a disaster by switching off all servers at site 1 except DC/DNS server.

Successfully completed a full catalog restore onto the warm standby server and all appears well. (Installed the PDDO agent on the warm standby server after installing Netbackup but before restoring the catalog.)

From the catalog I can view the "copy 2" files stored on the site 2 Puredisk server, and have set them to be the primary copy.

However, cannot perform a restore of these files to the client: job fails almost immediately with error code 10 and detailed log shows error 800.

Can't find any documentation on how to configure a restored master server to restore from a Puredisk storage pool so aware I might be missing a piece of configuration. Have tried rerunning pddocfg.exe on the restored master server. If I run pddocfg in "update" mode it succeeds but still can't restore. If I run it in "new" mode it fails (unsurprisingly since the restored master already knows about the storage pool).

I have raised a support call about this but thought I'd see if anyone on the forums has any advice - thanks in advance!

Site A
NetBackup 6.5.3 master/media server with PDDO (NBU01)
PureDisk 6.5.1 SPA (PD01)

Site B
NetBackup 6.5.3 media server with PDDO (NBU02)
PureDisk 6.5.1 SPA (PD02)

one NBU domain,
SLP is defined as following:
1. Backup to PD01
2. Duplication to PD02

optimized duplication could be indicated
a) in job details (starting optimized duplication...)
b) on both PD SPA as there was running a replication job on both sides

So, optimized duplication was running well...

.. until upgrading NBU 6.5.3 to 6.5.4 and PD6.5.1 to PD6.6

SLP keeps unchanged.

Problem now:
Duplication jobs now running as a simple duplication job (not as an optimized duplication job)
Only on the target SPA I see a job - this is a PDDO backup job. On the source PD SPA there is nothing to see.
All (the whole) data are transfered between the two PD SPAs
There is no error message.

Any ideas, why optimized duplication is not working?

Thanks in advance,
http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/move-mbe-and-spa-new-server

Has anyone gone through the process of moving their MBE or SPA to a new physical (or virtual) server?

I originally built an All-in-One PD Server, with 1 TB of internal storage. My environment has grown past the intial server, and I now want to move the SPA and MBE to different p or v machines. The long term goal is to re-purpose the original PD server.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/nb-7-puredisk-architecture-question

Hopefully someone can help me with this, we purchased NB 6.5 four months ago and then got side tracked on installing everything so I can't remember how it had all been planned out with the sales rep at the time. I just got an upgrade to 7 notification so I figure might as well use that since we haven't even installed it yet. So, what we had originally envisioned was running one beefy server connected to a large storage array and a large tape library, backups come from the clients to disk, de-dupe happens on the server, what's left is written to tape for archival purposes or for restores from dates beyond what is kept on disk. We don't want cpu activity on the clients related to de-duplication as our servers are compute-bound.

We have a box with dual quad-core cpu's and 32 GB of memory, it's got 5 TB of disk and a tape library. Can we do all in one or would that be asking for trouble? Currently we have an older netbackup install that's doing straight to tape backups for about 350 servers with a concurrency of 12 going to two LTO3 drives and it's working fine, obviously its not doing backup to disk or de-dupe.

What we've got purchased is described as:
SYMC NETBACKUP DEDUPLICATION OPTION 7.0 XPLAT 1 FRONT END TBYTE STD LIC
VRTS NETBACKUP PUREDISK 6.5 XPLAT 1 TBYTE FRONT END CAPACITY STD LIC

I'm honestly not sure what the difference is between puredisk and "deduplication option" in the 7.0 license or if it's just the two merged together now. First question is can the combination of what we've bought accomplish what we want irrespective of hardware; i.e. can we back all the clients up to disk, de-duplicate that data on disk, then write it to tape? I don't care if we can only restore from tape but would prefer to restore from disk if it's present, otherwise hit the tape.

Assuming the question of whether we can do what we want is yes, can we do it all with one server? We don't have a lot of data to back up, at least initially, and it will probably take a long time before we'd reach 1 TB to back up with this server. If the answer is no, what do we need, and what is optimal, obviously both would be considered.

Thanks in advance,

David
