The NetBackup 5020 Appliance supports Fibre Channel connections for data traffic between storage pools and from a NetBackup media server. However, the NetBackup media server has to be running on a NetBackup 5200 or 5220 Appliance for this to work and be supported.

Symantec should consider expanding support to non-appliance NetBackup media servers, the ability to connect to the NetBackup 5020 Appliance via Fibre Channel for fast movement of data.

FC for media server to 5020.

I totaly agree with this proposition ! I would like to use 5020 appliances with media server running on our own servers (with RedHat Linux).

I was in Symantec Vision Barcelona 2011 and followed the great session of Alex Davies about Netbackup tunning.

We only have 1 Gb ethernet, not yet 10 Gb and it's clear that we can obtain better performance with 8 Gb FC than with TCP/IP on ethernet 1 Gb.

FC has less overhead than tcp/ip, is also more secure in non secure DMZ zone.

Thanks.

Pierre.
