http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/outlook-2003-outgoing-mail-problem

We have been using Symantec for years with our Outlook 2003, all machines have WIndows XP installed. For the past 3 weeks we are receiving an Outgoing message error.

Task 'SMTP server name - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042109): 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact the server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

We can receive the emails but can not send. I have checked and rechecked the Outlook settings over and over. We are connecting to a Network Solutions email server that we have been using for over 5 years. All of the Outlook settings are correct. I set up the same Outlook account at home that I have on my work computer. NO ERROR. The only difference is, we run Symantec antivirus at work and we go through a server running MS Server 2003. My only conclusion is that something changed in the Symatec software or setting.

I have turned off the scan email option at the server level of Symantec, but it is permanently turned on for the workstations in the building. I have no way to turn it off at the workstation level. When I turned it off on the server I tried to send an email through an Outlook account set up for the Network Solutions email. I still received the error.

When I test the Outlook settings on the email account I get a different error message. I am sorry I did not save it, but the message stated that it can SEE the outgoing mail server but can not connect to it.

I have spent countless frustrating hours trying to figure out how to fix this problem. My boss is upset because she can not send emails. I set up her contact list in the Network Solutions mail so she could send emails, but she needs to send more than 100 at a time so I am back to troubleshooting this Outlook problem and I am out of ideas.

Any help or suggestions that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/unscannable-emails-symantec-mail-security-smtp

We have set unscannable emails to be forwarded to Quarantine forum (using SMS 5.0.1.205). But some of legitimate emails are also considered as unscannable (might be because of the message/attachment format) and forwared to Quarantine, the issue is we are not able to release these legitimate emails from Quarantine to Inbox.

For your information,
MTA service is running.
We are able to release some of the emails from Quarantine to Inbox.
Latest patch is updated.
Domain is added in 'Allowed Senders Domain' group

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-determine-which-messages-are-being-deined

Hi all,

I was wondering if there is a way to see which messages are being denied by our inbound server policies? We have not set the deny option in the config of any incoming mail and have set it to quarantine meduim and high threat spam messages. I cannot find a report on which addresses are being denied and also the users do not always receive notifications to alert them a mail was denied. Ultimately I would like to find out so I can make sure the right emails get through.

Any advice is appreciated.

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/stopping-email-regions

Hi,

We have certain domains that only receive email from certain geographic regions, is there a way to either exclude or include entire regions?

We would be interested in simply blocking all traffic from Russia, China, Africa, etc...

Thanks

We are inondated with Viagra emails and they ARE spam, many of them come from China.

We have attempted to configure the settings to stop them to no avail. The from's are often setup like this:

VIAGRA ® Reseller [username@domain.com] where username and domain are our INTERNAL username and domains...

The content is something like this in the body:

Can't see everything? Visit online version here. <http://fe454.mimihxc.cn/>

We want to block this content and have tried everything to stop it but cant, how do we stop it?

Forwarding hundredes if not thousands of these emails to gsubmit has been USELESS!

Hello,

We are running "Symantec mail Security for SMTP 5.0" in our environment integrated with UNIX based Messaging Server.

I would like all my users with email client (e.g., outlook) to have Anti-spam BOX as "outgoing mail server" with authentication SMTP.

Is it possible or not? ( i did setup LDAP integration on anit-spam box with our mail server's LDAP service). If yes, please help me implement this.

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/shms-whitelisting-listserv

Hi,

We use SHMS and one of our users reports that recently, all incoming mail from a listserv is being quarantined. The sender addresses are many, so it isn't practical to whitelist each one individually. The only consistent way I see to identify the listserv is that the subject line starts with "[epn]". Is there a way to whitelist based on the subject, or is there another way to allow these listserv emails through for this user?

Thanks,

http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/increase-spam-recenlty

I have several domains using Hosted Mail Security. Over the past several weeks all have reported an increase in the amount of spam that gets through. Is this realted to the merger with MessageLabs? I hope not as the brightmail engine did an excellent job of filter spam. I'd hate to have to go looking for another vendor as I really was very pleased with the old HMS.

Anyone seen an uptick in spam getting through as of late?
