How To Install Symantec Management Platform 7.1

1.     Summary

This article details the steps I took to install the Symantec Management Platform (SMP) 7.1 on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 VM, with 8 CPU's, and 16GB Ram.   These steps worked flawlessly for me, but should be reviewed with your architect first to ensure they will work for your environment.  Some steps may be modified based on your requirements, so please keep that in mind when reading through this article.

2.     Configure OS

2.1.    Enable AD browsing.

2.2.    Add the following users to the Administrators group on the server.

·         You (your adm account, as the installer)

·         Altiris Application Identity (service account)

2.3.   Optional: Modify the User Account Control settings

2.3.1.Click Start | Control Panel.

2.3.2.In Control Panel, click User Accounts.

2.3.3.In the User Accounts window, click Change User Account Control Settings.

2.3.4.Move the slider down to the bottom Never Notify me when:.

2.4.    Disable the Windows Firewall

2.4.1.Click on Windows Firewall with Advanced Security in the left pane of Server Manager.

2.4.2.Click on Windows Firewall Properties in the right pane of Server Manger.

2.4.3.Change the Firewall state to Off on the Domain Profile Tab.

2.4.4.Change the Firewall state to Off on the Private Profile Tab.

2.4.5.Change the Firewall state to Off on the Public Profile Tab.

2.5.    Disable IE ESC

2.5.1.Click on Server Manager in the left pane of the Server Manager.

2.5.2.Click on Configure IE ESC in the right pane.

2.5.3.Check Off for the Administrators and Users then click OK.

3.     Install OS Features

3.1.    Install WCF, .NET, IIS

3.1.1.In Server Manager, click on Features in the left pane.

3.1.2.Click Add Feature in the right pane.

3.1.3.Check WCF Activation under .NET Framework 3.5.1 Features and click Next.

3.1.4.Click Add Required Role Services in the window that pops up.

3.1.5.Click Next.

3.1.6.Check the boxes for the following items, and then click Next. 

3.1.7.Click Add Required Role Services in the window that pops up.

3.1.8.Click Install.

3.1.9.When done, review and correct any failures, then click Close.

5.     Install SMP pre-requisites

5.1.    Download these files, copy them to C:\downloads on the SMP, and install them.  (you may have to create this folder manually)

·      Silverlight from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=149156 (Uncheck the Enable Microsoft Update box and complete the install)

            ·     Java from here: http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=37717

            ·     Flash from here: http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

            ·     Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable from here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=13255

            ·     Download SIM from here:

   5.2. Reboot.

6.     Install SIM

6.1.    Double-click C:\downloads\symantec_sim_7_x_xx.exe

6.2.    Click No when it prompts you about not finding SQL, which if you followed my SQL install article here, you will be just fine.

6.3.    Click Next.

6.4.    Checkmark to accept the license terms, then click Next.

6.5.    Click Begin install.

6.6.    After it installs click Finish.

7.     Install Core SMP

7.1.    When you launch SIM, it may prompt you to update SIM if an update is available.  Choose Update Now and click OK.

7.2.    When SIM is done updating, launch it, then change the Filter by: toProduct Type, then change theFilter: to Platform

7.3.    Checkmark Symantec Management Platform 7.1, and then click Next.

7.4.    Click Install Documentation and Install Migration Wizard Components… then click Next. (You may checkmark Install Language Support if you like)

7.5.    Click to accept the license agreement and then click Next.

7.6.    Enter your information and click Next.

7.7.    Review the Install Readiness Check.  Click on the Microsoft IIS correction hyperlink labeled Click to automatically install and configure the required IIS Role Services.

7.8.    Click Yes when prompted to complete that install.

7.9.    Click Check install readiness again and then click Next.

7.10.Configure your settings. You may click Send Test Email if you configure your email settings. Then click Next.

7.11.Click OK on these two screens when they pop up:

7.12.Enter your SQL Server Name, check Use Windows authentication, check Create new and leave the database name as the default Symantec_CMDB and click Next. You can change the default name if you REALLY want to.

7.13.SIM will verify the db connection and provide the Installation Summary for your review.  Review it for any errors and rectify them before you proceed to click Begin Install.

7.14.Sit back and wait for about 15-30 minutes.

7.15.When done installing, click Next.

7.16.Uncheck the Run NS Migration Wizard box and click Finish.

8.     Install remaining solutions

8.1.    Click Start |All Programs |Symantec |Symantec Management Console 7.1

8.2.    Click through various menus.  After ensuring there are no issues, return to SIM and select the remaining products you wish to install.

9.     Install Licenses

9.1.    Open SIM and install licenses.

9.2.    Click Start |All Programs |Symantec |Symantec Management Console 7.1

9.3.    Click through various menus ensuring there are no issues.

9.4.    Reboot.

10.     Install SMP Hotfixes (Optional)

10.1.    Install the Activity Center Hotfix manually (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO58413 ) until SMP SP2 is released.

10.2.    Install the PCA hotfix manually (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH159971 )

10.3.    Mac 10.7 support hotfix was not added as it is to be in SMP 7.1 SP2 (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO58968 )
